Technical Project Management

Course Description

Course objectives will include: mapping the phases of a project; introducing specific project management tools; and discussing and demonstrating the application of these tools in the development and implementation of new technologies and processes for diagnostics, manufacturing and drug discovery.

Project phases will include project planning, management and execution, and evaluation and reporting. Tools discussed will include the Gantt chart, application of the concept of earned value, scenario and contingency planning, risk assessment, stakeholder analysis, identifying and managing the project's critical path, and various other techniques used to manage people (teams), budget and time.

Case studies will be integrated to illustrate the application of the above information.

Brian J. Koziol has 29 years of progressively responsible basic and clinical research experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and academic settings with the last five focused in global project management. This experience includes all aspects of project management and leading research teams spanning the full lifecycle from research drug discovery to new product launches. This work has resulted in over 35 publications in basic and clinical research.

Brian currently serves as Associate Director, R&D Project Management at Amgen, Inc. in Thousand Oaks, CA. He has worked on projects across multiple therapeutic areas, and is currently focused in Oncology.

Brian holds a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Massachusetts, a Master's Degree in Kinesiology/Exercise Biochemistry and a Ph.D. in Experimental and Clinical Nutrition both from UCLA. He currently holds part-time faculty positions as Distinguished Special Lecturer of Biology and Chemistry at the University of New Haven, Connecticut and Adjunct Assistant professor in the Department of Family Environmental Sciences at California State University, Northridge.

His professional affiliations include the Project Management Institute, American Society for Nutritional Sciences, the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He also serves on the editorial board of Applied Clinical Trials and as a peer reviewer for several professional journals. 1993.
