SLAS Discovery Manuscript Category Descriptions and Examples

For all manuscript categories, be prepared to submit word count; all author names, academic degrees, affiliations; and a short title of up to 45 characters. Indicate the name, complete street mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address for the author to whom correspondence should be directed. It is preferable for contact information to be provided for all coauthors, especially telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. Table and figure legends and any permissions information should be included at the end of a manuscript. For examples, browse published manuscripts at SLAS Discovery Online.

Reviews and Perspectives

Reviews and Perspectives should not exceed 10,000 words in length (including abstract and notes / excluding references and figure/table legends) and contain no more than 6 figures and/or tables. Authors are encouraged to use figures and tables to summarize and educate. The word “Review” or “Perspective” should be included in the titles and abstracts should state that the article is a review or survey, or a perspective. Format is less restricted than Original Research articles, but minimally include a Cover Sheet, Title, Abstract, Introduction, Main Text/Sections, Summary/Conclusions and References (plus tables, table legends and figure legends.) The number of references for a Review article should total at least 100. For Perspectives, the number of references is not fixed but should appropriately cover both the point and counter-point of the views presented. [MANUSCRIPT EXAMPLE]

Original Research
Original Research must not exceed 6000 words in length (including abstract and notes / excluding references and figure/table legends) and contain no more than 6 figures and tables combined. Authors are encouraged to restrict figures and tables to essential data that cannot be described in the text and prudently place ancillary information in a Supplement (see Supplemental Material section of Instructions for Authors). The number of references should not exceed 40. Authors MAY or MAY NOT combine the Results and Discussion sections into one section.[MANUSCRIPT EXAMPLE]

Technical Notes
Technical Notes (extensions of previous work) are subject to the same rigorous peer review process as Original Research articles. Technical Notes must not exceed 4000 words in length (including abstract and notes / excluding references and figure/table legends) and contain no more than 4 figures and tables combined. References may not exceed 20. A Technical Note is the recommended format for submission of original research, such as early disclosure of novel methods; comparison of performance of competing instruments or software packages; or descriptions of experimental results of interest to the scientific community when economic or other constraints preclude full research on the underlying causes of the observations. In a Technical Note, the Results and Discussion sections of the manuscript MUST be combined into one section. [MANUSCRIPT EXAMPLE]

Application Notes
Application Notes (applications of known technologies) are subject to the same rigorous peer review process as original research articles. Application Notes must not exceed 4000 words in length (including abstract and notes / excluding references and figure/table legends) and contain no more than 4 figures and tables combined. References may not exceed 20. An Application Note is recommended for the presentation of data on new instruments or software packages (excluding commercial information), or disclosure of new applications of established technologies (e.g. new assay for a target where the format described has been published for another target previously, unless this extension is not obvious). In an Application Note, the Results and Discussion sections of the manuscript MUST be combined into one section. [MANUSCRIPT EXAMPLE]
