This blog chronicles my travels as CEO of SLAS, a global professional society dedicated to advancing life sciences discovery and technology. In addition to getting to know me better on a personal level, my goal for this blog is to shine a spotlight on SLAS members and their unique stories and experiences. Opinions expressed within this blog are mine (Vicki Loise) and do not represent those of the Society. And yes, our lawyer told me to include that.
Miles logged on this trip: 14 steps from my kitchen, where I finished my coffee this morning, to my home office space
Planes, trains or automobiles: Walking!
Road food: Hmm, better figure out a plan for lunches at home
Entertainment: The occasional barking of our dog, Bandit, when another dog dares to cross our lawn
My blog this time around is a different spin on being "On the Road." The entire SLAS Professional Team is no longer On the Road to get to work as we have gone completely virtual for the next few months.
The lease on the SLAS HQ space expires at the end of June and our new space won’t be ready until early September. So, as of June 18 we are all comfortably and productively ensconced in our home offices (this is my view as I type). SLAS has used a virtual office model since its inception. We have built a culture of being able to work anywhere, so this transition for those of us who worked in the office isn’t too drastic. We do believe we still need a brick and mortar office space that is flexible based on who is coming in to work there, accommodates growth and is functional for committee and Board meetings.
For those of you who had been to the SLAS office in St. Charles, here are a few pictures of the move-out. That large conference table had to be sawed into four pieces to get it out of the space (we’re still wondering how it ever got in the office to begin with).
In September we’ll move into our completely new office in Oak Brook, Illinois. Oak Brook is located about 15 miles west of downtown Chicago and only a 20- to 30-minute drive from either of Chicago’s two airports — O'Hare International or Midway International. Oak Brook is a popular destination for corporate headquarters and easily accessible from many of the roads in the Chicagoland highway system.
The space plans include options for collaboration spaces and flexible meeting space while utilizing many options to maximize productivity and make for an enjoyable work environment. We will be sure to share photos once it is complete. We plan to hold an Open House on November 14 when the SLAS Board of Directors will be in town for their meeting. If you happen to be in the Chicago area on that date (or anytime) please feel free to stop by.
In the meantime, you can continue to reach us as you always have. We'll send our new address information when we are moved into the new space. Our phone number will not change.
